What is a Mala and How do I use one?

A mala is a string of beads used in meditation as a tool for counting and focusing the mind. To use a mala:

  1. Hold the mala in your right hand and use the thumb to gently pull each bead towards you.

  2. Repeat a mantra, prayer, or affirmation with each bead.

  3. When you reach the guru bead, traditionally do not cross it and turn the mala around to continue.

  4. Focus on your breath and intention while using the mala.

  5. Continue until you have repeated your mantra/affirmation the desired number of times.
